After finding and clearing our land, we thought the hardest part was behind us.
We were wrong.
The real challenge began when it came time to bring our home to life — literally from the ground up.
We did it all ourselves: the electrical, plumbing, and excavation work, from digging trenches to running pipes and wires. It took grit, stubbornness, and more late nights than I can count. There were moments of stress, literal blood, sweat, and tears, and yes… failed inspections that almost broke our spirit.
But every failure taught us something new. We learned to read code books, troubleshoot wiring, and install plumbing lines that would actually pass inspection the second (or third) time around. It wasn’t easy — and honestly, it’s not for everyone.
If I could give one piece of advice, it would be this:
Don’t be afraid to delegate.
There’s no shame in calling in professionals for tasks that require specialized skills or experience. Hiring the right help can save you time, money, and sanity, especially when dealing with systems that keep your home safe and functional.
Looking back, would we do it again? Absolutely.
But we’d do it smarter, plan more, consult more, and pace ourselves better.
Building our home with our own hands gave us a sense of pride that no contractor could ever give. It reminded us that homeownership isn’t just about walls and roofs — it’s about perseverance, learning, and creating something that’s truly yours.
If you’re thinking about taking on a project like this, or if you want to find the perfect land to start your journey, I’d love to help guide you.
